Horse drawn carriages are an iconic part of New York City and have an integral role in the history of Central Park. Today the industry remains a popular tourist attraction and is beloved by the vast majority of New Yorkers.

There are approximately 200 horses, 150-200 horse carriage drivers/owners, and 68 horse carriages operating in New York City, who follow a strict set of regulations enforced by multiple city agencies. The rate of a horse carriage ride is also set by New York City and increased every three years based on the consumer price index.

The horses benefit physically and mentally from their work routine. They express relaxed and contented posture, facial expressions, and behaviors throughout their day ensuring they're comfortable with their job, surroundings, and general lifestyle.

Every horse carriage operates under a separate medallion with horses personally owned by the carriage owners and drivers. What you pay to take a ride in one goes directly towards that small business's family and their operating expenses including the care and upkeep of their horses.

The majority of carriage operators in NYC are first and second generation immigrants who love their horses and do their best by them. They were previously represented by The Teamsters Union and are currently represented by the Transport Workers Union.
